What to expect with Data Recovery
Data recovery starts with working out which kind of problem you actually have, because the two kinds are not remotely alike. A logical failure — deleted files, a formatted card, a corrupted partition, a drive that mounts but shows nothing — leaves the hardware intact and the data usually still physically present. A physical failure — clicking, grinding, a drive that never spins up, an SSD the Mac no longer sees at all — is a hardware problem, and no amount of software will fix it. Diagnosis is free, and we tell you which one you are dealing with before you commit to anything.
Logical recoveries are often done in front of you. We work from a copy wherever we can rather than the original drive, so nothing we do makes the situation worse, and you can see the files reappearing as they are found. Where the drive is healthy enough, this is frequently finished in a single visit and your files come back onto a drive or a machine you already have.
Physical failures are different and we will be straight with you about it. A drive that is clicking or seizing needs specialist facilities, not a technician with recovery software, and every extra attempt to power it up can cost you data that was still recoverable an hour earlier. The single most useful thing you can do is stop using it and unplug it. We tell you honestly what a realistic chance of recovery looks like, and what it would cost, before anything is attempted.
The one promise we will not make is that everything comes back. Nobody can promise that honestly, and a drive with failed storage sometimes simply loses what was on it. What we do promise is that you pay nothing if we recover nothing, that we quote before we start, and that anything we do recover is handed back to you on media you keep — never left sitting on our equipment.

What data recovery usually costs
Logical recoveries are priced by the hour. A physically failed drive is quoted as a job after a free assessment, because the work involved is different in kind.
Priced by drive condition after assessment.
All-in figures covering labour at £120/hour (one-hour minimum) plus the parts a typical job needs. They are a guide, not a quote: the exact price is confirmed with you on site before anything is opened, and under our no fix, no fee guarantee you pay nothing if we cannot put it right. The data recovery faults we see most, and what we do about them
What each fault usually turns out to be, what we actually do about it, and roughly what it comes to. Where there is something worth trying yourself first, each one links to it — some of these you will fix in five minutes without us, and we would rather you did.

My files have gone, or the drive is not detected
What it usually turns out to be
Either a logical fault — a corrupted partition table, a failed update, a deleted account profile, where the data is all still physically present — or a genuine hardware failure of the drive. The two need completely different handling, and the wrong approach on the wrong one destroys recoverable data.
What we do about it
We assess whether it is logical or physical before touching anything, and we work from an image of the drive rather than the drive itself wherever possible. Logical recoveries are priced by the hour. A physically failed drive is quoted as a job after a free assessment, and we tell you what is realistically recoverable before you commit to anything.
There are a few things worth checking yourself before booking anything — the safe checks for this fault are on our fault finder, and they solve it often enough to be worth five minutes.

What it usually turns out to be
Often the cable or the enclosure rather than the drive inside it, which is the good news — a failed USB bridge board leaves the disk itself perfectly healthy. Where the drive is a portable one that has been dropped, or a desktop one that now clicks, the mechanism itself has usually gone.
What we do about it
We test the drive outside its enclosure first, since a failed bridge board is common and cheap to work around. If the disk is sound, we recover your data straight off it. If the mechanism has failed, we tell you honestly what the odds and the costs look like before you spend anything.
