What to expect with Console Repair

We repair Xbox Series X, Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED — so the first step is a proper diagnosis to confirm whether the fault is a port, the power system, thermals, or storage.

The Nintendo Switch fails in ways the home consoles do not, because it is the only one that gets carried around and plugged in several times a day. The single most common fault we see is a worn USB-C port: the console charges intermittently, then only at a certain angle, then not at all. That is a port replacement, not a new console, and the Switch Lite and OLED are the same job. Docking problems are the other pattern — a Switch that works handheld but gives no picture on the TV is usually the dock or its cable rather than the console, which is worth establishing before anyone opens anything. Cracked screens, dead batteries and water damage are all repairable too, and your games, saves and Nintendo account are untouched throughout.

Controller drift is its own category, and worth being straight about. A stick that moves the character on its own is a worn potentiometer inside the stick module, and no amount of cleaning or firmware resetting fixes it permanently — the part is mechanically worn. Replacing the module does fix it properly, and we do that for DualSense, Xbox and Joy-Con controllers. The honest caveat is arithmetic: on a cheap third-party pad the repair can approach the price of a new one, and we will say so rather than take the work. On a DualSense Edge, a Pro controller or a pad you are attached to, it is clearly worth doing.

A good share of console jobs are not faults at all but neglect, and this is the cheapest visit you will ever book. A console pulls household dust through itself continuously, and after two or three years in a typical London living room — worse on carpet, worse still in a cabinet, much worse with pets — the heatsink is packed and the thermal paste has dried out. The machine gets loud, then throttles, then starts cutting out mid-game. A strip-down, clean and repaste returns it to how it ran when new, and doing it before the shutdowns start is what stops a cheap service becoming an expensive board repair.

We also take on the machines most shops turn away: PS3, PS2, Xbox 360, older Nintendo hardware and the occasional genuinely retro console. Parts are harder to source and we will tell you honestly when something is not economically repairable, but a surprising amount of it comes back to life — usually a power supply, a laser, dried capacitors or a drive belt rather than anything exotic.

Cleaning, thermal work, controller modules, power supplies, disc drives and Switch port replacements are done at your home or office across Greater London, usually in a single visit. Board-level work — HDMI port replacement, a failed retimer, liquid damage that reached the mainboard — needs a microscope and proper rework equipment, so those go to our workshop and take a few days. We tell you which category yours is when we quote, not afterwards. Every repair carries our 90-day parts-and-labour warranty, and under No Fix, No Fee you pay nothing if we cannot put it right.
