What to expect with Laptop Repair

Every laptop repair begins with a free diagnosis. Our engineer comes to your home or office anywhere in Greater London, works out exactly what has failed — a screen, a battery, a charging port, a drive or something on the motherboard — and gives you a fixed price before any work starts. If the laptop is not worth repairing, we will tell you straight.

Most laptop repairs are done on-site while you wait: screen replacements, keyboard and battery swaps, SSD and RAM upgrades, and Windows or software fixes. Around seven in ten jobs are finished in a single visit, so in most cases you keep your laptop the same day rather than losing it for a week.

The awkward part of Windows laptop repair is not the work, it is the parts. There are hundreds of models across a dozen manufacturers, and a Dell XPS panel is nothing like the one in an HP Pavilion of the same size. We identify your exact model and service tag before ordering anything, which is why we ask for it on the phone — it is the difference between arriving with the right screen and wasting your afternoon.

Where a Windows laptop differs most from a Mac is the economics, and we would rather have that conversation honestly than take the job regardless. A £1,400 ThinkPad or XPS is almost always worth repairing. A four-year-old £300 budget laptop with a cracked screen and a dying drive frequently is not, and we will show you the arithmetic rather than quietly billing you for it. When replacement is the sensible answer, we can move your files, programs and Windows licence across to the new machine instead.

The laptop repair faults we see most, and what we do about them

What each fault usually turns out to be, what we actually do about it, and roughly what it comes to. Where there is something worth trying yourself first, each one links to it — some of these you will fix in five minutes without us, and we would rather you did.

The laptop will not turn on, or powers on with no display

£120 – £250·Door or workshop

What it usually turns out to be

A dead charger or a failed DC jack accounts for most of these. Where the machine powers on — fans spin, lights come on — but shows nothing, the fault is usually the screen, its cable, or the graphics chip rather than anything to do with power.

What we do about it

We test the charger, the power rail and the board in sequence, so you learn which of the three has failed rather than replacing all of them. Charging jacks and screens are done at your desk; a genuinely failed board comes back with us, and we will tell you plainly when it is not worth repairing.

There are a few things worth checking yourself before booking anything — the safe checks for this fault are on our fault finder, and they solve it often enough to be worth five minutes.

A guide range, not a quote — the exact figure is confirmed on site before anything is opened, and you pay nothing if we cannot fix it.

The laptop screen is cracked or has spreading black ink

£120 – £280·Fixed at your door

What it usually turns out to be

Physical damage to the panel — usually from a knock to the lid, something left on the keyboard when it was closed, or a drop. The spreading black blot is liquid crystal leaking out, and it will keep spreading. The panel is a separate part from everything else, so nothing else in the machine is affected.

What we do about it

We identify the exact panel your model takes before ordering — a Dell XPS panel and an HP Pavilion panel of the same size are not interchangeable — then fit it at your home or office, usually inside an hour. On a cheap older laptop we will show you the arithmetic on repair versus replacement rather than quietly billing you for it.
