PS5 shutting down mid-game: clogged heatsink and spread liquid metal

A PS5 near Wandsworth kept switching off during play. The heatsink and power supply were packed with dust and the liquid metal had spread, so we serviced it on site and topped the liquid metal up.

The call

A customer near Wandsworth got in touch about a PS5 that kept turning itself off part way through a game. It had been happening often enough that the console was unusable for longer sessions. We visited at his home to strip and service it there.

Reported fault: turns off on its own mid-game

What we found

  • With the console opened, the fan housing and internal shielding were heavily coated in dust — clearly visible as grey matting around the fan and across the chassis.
  • The heatsink fins were packed with felted dust, thick enough to block airflow through the fin stack.
  • The liquid metal on the APU had spread out from where it should sit, so heat transfer to the heatsink was no longer even.
  • Dust was also caked along the intake vents and inside the outer housing panels.

What we did

  1. 1Removed the outer panels and shielding to get to the cooling assembly.
  2. 2Cleaned the dust out of the heatsink fin stack and the fan housing with a brush.
  3. 3Cleared the dust from the power supply area and the vent openings on the case panels.
  4. 4Tidied and topped up the liquid metal on the processor before refitting the heatsink.
  5. 5Reassembled the console and ran it under load to confirm it stayed on.

The result

The customer has had no more mid-game shutdowns since the service. The work is covered by our 90-day warranty, and if we can't fix a fault there's no fee.
