MacBook 12-inch with a shattered trackpad: replaced at home in New Malden

A customer in New Malden had a 12-inch MacBook with a shattered trackpad. We ordered a replacement and fitted it at their home in about an hour, and the MacBook was back to normal.

The call

A customer in New Malden got in touch about their 12-inch MacBook. The trackpad had shattered, leaving a web of cracks across the glass, and they wanted it fixed without having to take the laptop anywhere.

Reported fault: trackpad glass shattered

What we found

The trackpad glass was broken across most of its surface, with the worst of the damage near the front edge — physical damage, not a software or settings fault.
The MacBook still started up and reached the login screen normally, so the damage was confined to the trackpad.
With the rest of the machine working, replacing the trackpad was the right fix rather than anything more involved.

What we did

1Ordered a replacement trackpad for the 12-inch MacBook.
2Visited the customer at home in New Malden once the part had arrived.
3Removed the shattered trackpad and fitted the new one.
4Checked the MacBook was working normally with the new trackpad before handing it back.

The result

The repair took about an hour at the customer's home, and the MacBook was back to normal with a working trackpad — a happy customer. The work is covered by our 90-day warranty, and if we can't fix a fault there's no fee.
